What will we learn in PE at WGSA?

PE Learning Journey

Physical Education gives a unique opportunity for all students, regardless of sporting ability to explore a variety of sports through participation. In PE students will also learn about healthy lifestyles and have an opportunity to use our on-sight fitness suite to put their knowledge into practice. Throughout the year students will participate in both team and individual sports. In turn this will develop communication as well as resilience. Sports that students will participate in are as followed:

  • Football
  • Netball
  • Basketball
  • Table Tennis
  • Badminton
  • Athletics
  • Rounders
  • Tennis

At Key Stage 4, we currently follow the Btec Firsts Sport qualification.

How do we encourage students to succeed in PE at WGSA?

Students are encouraged to participate fully in every PE lesson allowing them to develop both physically and mentally through sport. As department we are keen to see students flourish and all of our students are encouraged to express themselves through sport and use each lesson as a platform to showcase their individual and collective talent. Students have access to a wide range of extra-curricular activities which is a further opportunity to develop their skills and love of the sport.

In PE, it is essential that we create an inclusive and welcoming environment where all students can engage regardless of their barriers.  We aim to provide appropriate support by demonstrating and talking through drills that we expect students to perform.  We modify exercises when necessary and encourage peer support and collaboration to create a welcoming atmosphere.  We use repetitive questioning to ensure students are familiar with key words, phrases and techniques to encourage them to improve and thrive in a sporting environment.

How do PE lessons at WGSA help students to prepare for the world of work?

As a department we recognize the importance that PE lessons have in preparing students for the world of work. PE naturally has many transferable skills such as teamwork, effective communication, work ethic and perseverance. PE lessons provide students with opportunities to work as part of a team to solve issues as well as opportunities to perform as an individual. This balance is key in preparing students for the world of work.

How we promote WGSA’s vision and values in our PE lessons?

In PE we encourage our students to have a strong Belief in their own sporting ability and to have the Courage to participate in new sports whilst exploring new techniques. As a department we demand every student participates in activities with a high level of Integrity. This in turn will promote a Love of the subject, providing students with a platform to participate in sports outside of the academy within local sports teams, in the hope that this participation will lead to an Ambition to perform at the highest level.
