From the Statement of Entitlement from the Church of England: ‘Religious Education in a Church school should enable every child to flourish and to live life in all its fullness. (John 10:10). It will help educate for dignity and respect encouraging all to live well together.’
The Religious Education department at The West Grantham Church of England Secondary Academy prides itself on being an open, innovative and inspiring area in which all student’s opinions and beliefs are appreciated, respected and shared. The aim for the department is simple – to encourage students to develop opinions, to be able to work with and appreciate others whose opinions may differ and to respect the variety of faith and belief that our community offers.
All Religious Education staff are passionate and well educated about their subject to encourage the best possible levels of success. A variety of different learning styles are encouraged to ensure that at the forefront of each lesson, all students have the opportunity to succeed.
We support the school’s values by developing our students’ Creativity, Responsibility and Wisdom in all of our lessons:
- Creativity is encouraged in lessons by giving students the time to reflect, being empathetic and allowing time to explore important questions and topics. Examples include performing pieces of drama, using symbolism in art and creating news reports.
- Responsibility is encouraged through open and frank discussions about the impact of religious belief seen in our society and how it shapes core British values. RE makes students aware of their responsibility in our world and helps prepare them for life outside of the classroom.
- Wisdom is encouraged by exploring holy books and texts as well as analysing issues linked to philosophy and ethics. Wisdom is not just centred on acquiring knowledge, but knowing how and when to use it in our ever changing society.

Religious Education at KS3 complies with the new Lincolnshire agreed syllabus for RE and ensures students receive a balance of believing (theology), living (human/social sciences) and thinking (philosophy) through the curriculum. Units from both the study of Christianity and Islam are also supplemented with units looking at other world religions, such as Buddhism, as well as issues of prejudice and discrimination and the portrayal of religion in the media for example. Students will also have the opportunity to explore non-religious world views such as those shared by humanists and atheists.

Perhaps more important than ever in our turbulent society, GCSE Religious Education seeks to look at belief, interpretation and practice of Christianity and Islam.
The course focuses on the teaching of core Christian and Muslim values, how each faith’s beliefs affect day to day life and how these traditional ideas fit in with a modern interpretation of our society.
Emphasis will be placed on philosophical questions of God’s existence, role and indeed, place in our lives. The ethics of such controversial topics such as abortion, euthanasia, terrorism and sexual identity will be investigated fully with an opportunity for students to not only learn from specialist staff, but to experience perspectives from guest speakers, visitors and trips outside the classroom.
Some of the aims of the Religious Education GCSE include –
- Investigate ultimate questions such as “why does evil exist?” and “what is the purpose of life?”
- Study topics that explain the diversity of life and religion in the modern world
- Improve philosophical thinking skills and the ability to think outside of the box
- Understand contemporary ethical and religious issues such as medical ethics and religious fundamentalism
- Develop communication skills and learn to clearly express your views and increase your self-confidence
